Since founded in November, 1959, for forty-eight years The Microbiological Society of Korea, MSK has promoted basic research and application of microbiology
as an academic society to spread the knowledge of microbiology.
Internationally, MSK joined The International Union of Microbiological Societies, IUMS in 1993, and held Korea-Russia International Symposium on Biotechnology (1993)
and Korea-China International Symposium on Biotechnology (1993-4) in Seoul, Korea. Also, the 9th International Symposium on the Genetics of Industrial Microorganisms: GIM-2002 was successfully held on July 1-5, 2002 at Hotel Hyundai Gyeongju.
Internally, The Microbiological Society of Korea, MSK joined the Federation of Korean Microbiological Societies with The Korean Society for Microbiology (KSMi),
The Korean Society of Virology (KSV), The Korean Society of Mycology (KSMy), and The Korean Society for Microbiology and Biotechnology (KMB), and cooperates actively to hold joint scientific conference. Besides, MSK contributes to local scientific research through provincial subdivisions in Gangwon, Chungcheong, and Honam region.
About 1,500 microbiologists who actually work in microbiological field joined MSK, and MSK is composed of several specific departments related to microbiology: biochemistry, physiology, molecular biology, ecology, industrial microbiology, pathology, genetics, and immunology. Each department does their best to improve education and research environment in microbiology field.
