The Microbiological Society of Korea
Together with the Korean Society for Microbiology and Biotechnology and the Korean Society of Virology, the Microbiological Society of Korea is part of the Federation of Korean Microbiological Societies (FKMS), sharing various social issues related to microorganisms such as health, environment, energy, and food and contributing to the establishment of science policies in Korea. In particular, during the COVID-19 pandemic, we actively devoted our best interest to relieve fear and insecurities for prompt return to daily lives.
As a member society of the International Union of Microbiological Societies, the Microbiological Society of Korea has taken the initiative in attracting and hosting various international academic events. We have successfully hosted Korea-Russia Biotechnology Symposium (1993), Korea-China Biotechnology Symposium (1993-4), International Symposium of the Genetics of Industrial Microorganisms (GIM) (2002), International Symposium on Microbial Ecology (ISME) (2014), and International Symposium on the Biology of Actinomycetes (ISBA) (2017).
Periodical literatures published by the Microbiological Society of Korea include 『Journal of Microbiology』 published monthly, 『Korean Journal of Microbiology』 published quarterly, and 『The Microorganisms and Industry』, a webzine published twice a year. In particular, the Journal of Microbiology is a professional academic journal registered in SCIE and PubMed and publishes excellent articles by microbiologists in Korea and worldwide. The Korean Journal of Microbiology published in Korean is also of great help to the general public interested in microbiology.
The Microbiological Society of Korea also published independent volumes such as 『Microbiology Laboratory and Microbiology』, 『Microbiological Applications』, 『Microbiology』, and 『Microbiology: Concepts and Connections』 which were donated to high schools. We also produced an online 『Encyclopedia of Microbiology』 with Naver Co., Ltd. to provide basic knowledge on microbiology terminology for the public.
Currently, with approximately 2,200 members and two branches in Gangwon and Chungcheong, the Microbiological Society of Korea is devoting to scientific research and education in fungal genetics, pathogenic microbiome and genetics, ecology/environment/taxonomy, molecular cell biology and genetics, physiology and biochemistry, applied microbiology and biotechnology, virology, and human microbiome and contributing to regional academic exchanges through seminars and special lectures.
