Abstract Fungi commonly encountered on monocotyledonous substrates were evaluated for their in vitro ability to produce enzymes involved in lignocellulose breakdown. Most were capable of structural polysaccharide utilization, but few produced enzymes associated with lignin breakdown. None of the monocotyledon-inhabiting fungi produced reactions as strongly as wood decay fungi.
