Abstract Mycelium growth of Streptomyces albidoflavus SMF301 in submerged culture using a chemically defined medium consisting of glucose, NH_4Cl, phosphates, and mineral salts was linked with the production of extracellular neutral protease (optimum pH: 7.0), whereas submerged spores formation was accompained with the production of extracellular alkaline protease (optimum pH, 9.0). Kinetic parameters calculated from batch and continuous cultures showed that specific growth rate (μ) was related to neutral protease production rate (q_npr). But specific spore formation rate (q_spr) and specific alkaline protease production rate (q_npr) were inversely related to mycelium growth rate (μ). The submerged spore formation sppeared concurrently with loss of muycelium, indicating that alkaline protease may be involving in the endogenous consumption of mycelium.
